I’m Winry: yoga-junkie, vegan, philosophy enthusiast, video game nerd, and musician.
I’m also the creator of everything you see here at ROCK!Well.
Learning a musical instrument can be a life-changing and mind-altering experience. Unfortunately, conventional teaching methods tend to pull us further away from our own unique sound and stifle creativity. Countless resources have been produced to show you the how of music. I’m here to reconnect you to the why.
My mission is to help you become a better musician by exploring the mental aspects of mastering your instrument and guide you in facilitating self-discovery and creativity through music. Join me in overcoming stage fright, practicing and learning more effectively, writing music that delivers the emotional impact you intend, overcoming writer’s block and more.
When I was young, I got it into my head that I just didn’t have what it took to be a musician. I’ve always loved music, but for years it seemed like a passion that would stay confined to my bedroom. I suffered from crippling stage fright and an acutely thin skin that made sharing my music a nightmare. I used to watch my favorite artists perform on stage and think, “man, I wish I could do that!” Paralyzed in a state of self-doubt that left me unable to create, I felt like I had lost my identity. Writing and creating music has always been how I process and make sense of the world; with my creativity blocked, I felt lost.
After 3 years of college, I chose to do what any sensible 20-year-old in a quarter-life crisis would do and dropped out of college to pursue a career in music full time. I figured a rigorous practice schedule would be the quickest road to fulfilling my dreams. I worked tirelessly for results that were less than stellar and found myself thinking, “there has to be a better way!”
In the years to follow, pored over every book I could find about learning an instrument and building a career in music. When I realized how simple the answer was, I only wished that someone had been there to show it to me when I was still playing the cello in my high school orchestra! Being a great musician has nothing to do with how fast your fingers can move; it all starts in the mind. From mastering difficult piece to becoming a great performer to writing heartwarming songs, mindful and conscious action is the key to overcoming obstacles and achieving your musical goals.
Expressing yourself through music can be an incredibly fulfilling and rewarding experience, but it takes a great deal of courage to be yourself openly. Music has taught me how to be myself in a world that is constantly pushing me to be someone else. It is my hope that by sharing everything that I’ve learned you, too, can turn a hobby into a life-long journey of growth and self-discovery.
Some random facts about me: born and raised in Austin, TX, I have two cats, two ferrets and just a slight addiction to Paramore. I’m the keyboardist for The Descendents of Erdrick and front-woman for The Bottomless. When I’m not writing or playing music, you can find me watching Adventure Time or playing Zelda with my other half and bandmate, AJ.
